Room Information
Graduate residences contain single rooms for graduate students and older undergraduates. Centrally located on campus, this area is open year-round.
Four floors in The Graduate Residences house a unique community dedicated to an educational living environment that is both supportive and challenging. Residential Life strives to create activities, which meet the diverse needs or interests of the residents and contribute to their personal and academic growth. Residents are encouraged to participate, as well as to introduce programs of their own that reflect their special interests or cultures. With 440 residents from a great variety of backgrounds, each of whom is becoming an expert in a particular field, we hope that you will take the initiative to get to know others. By participating in events and by sharing experiences or skills with others, you will enhance your own experience. In this and other ways, you can contribute to the success of the community.
The Graduate Residences consist of three buildings in a coeducational complex that contains 440 carpeted, single rooms averaging 12' x 10' (120 square feet). These buildings are subdivided into 16 halls with no more than ten students sharing a bathroom on a floor. These residences are open year-round (including recess periods) and accommodate less than 10% of all full-time degree-seeking students enrolled at the Storrs Campus. A small number of undergraduates also live in the halls. Approximately 58% are male students and 42% are female students. About 40% of the residents come from other countries outside the United States. New students will be assigned to rooms randomly based on availability.
Furnishings: Every room is furnished with an oak bureau, a bed, a desk, and a desk chair, and all rooms have had new carpet installed within the last five years. Here are some suggestions regarding what you should bring: a pillow, blankets, extra long twin sheets (80 x 36), towels, study lamp, cleaning materials, flashlight, and any other furnishings that you may need. Trash cans must be metal. Halogen lamps and lit candles are strictly prohibited.
All student rooms have been provided with telephone jacks (outlets). American students are encouraged to bring touch-tone telephones to campus. International students should be prepared to purchase a touch-tone telephone for approximately (U.S.) $20 upon arrival. Each room is equipped with a cable TV jack. Service is provided by HuskyVision, which can be reached at (860) 486-4357.
UITS, Telecommunications is the local telephone company for the University of Connecticut. They establish all policies pertaining to telephone service here at the University. Assistance on maintenance, telecommunications equipment and records, and student billing are all handled by them. They can be reached at 486-4357 or on the web.
Area Information
The complex is conveniently located in the center of campus. Since parking is limited in the center of campus, easy access to the Graduate Center, the library, and the academic facilities is a necessity. The physical layout of the complex encourages a quiet, studious atmosphere. Recreational and social activities are organized by the Graduate Residences Association (see below), as well as by Residential Life.
Complete kitchen facilities are located in the basements of Colchester, Farmington, Lyme, and Preston. The following appliances are in each kitchen area: a full-size refrigerator, a full-size freezer, two electric stoves with ovens, one sink, and one microwave oven. The University also provides tables and chairs adjacent to these areas.
Card-operated washers and dryers are conveniently located in the basements of Colchester, Farmington, Lyme, and Preston. Coin operated vending machines are located in the Branford Lounge. The machines in Branford distribute soda and candy. Soda machines are also located in all four kitchens. The machines accept only American coins. Fifty percent of the profits from these machines go to our council (Graduate Residences Association).
Getting Involved: All residents are members of the Graduate Residence Association (GRA), which is funded through profits from our Branford Lounge vending machines. The Association maintains close communication with both the Residence Hall staff and the Graduate Student Senate. Topics for agenda or any other concerns can be submitted to the Ashford Office or introduced at a general meeting. Residents are encouraged to get involved and help organize events that they would like to participate in.
The Graduate Student Senate (GSS) is the student government spokesperson for all graduate students in the University. Supported by the $10 Graduate Activities Fee, the GSS represents graduate interests on such issues as: University housing, parking, fees, policies, T.A. stipends, etc. Many services and activities are offered, including a short-term emergency loan fund, semester activities calendar, monthly newsletter, graduate handbook, and social events. The GSS is located in the Graduate Center, Room 318. The Graduate Student Activities phone number is 486-GRAD and the office phone is 486-3907. Membership in the GSS is open and free to all graduate students.
