Conference Housing - Visiting Scholar and Faculty Housing
The Provost's Office, with the help of Residential Life, will 'advertise' the eleven (11) units reserved for visiting scholars, and receive the applications. The committee understands that Residential Life would deal with the contracts, and with the 'legal' documents regarding fire, etc., to be distributed to each scholar by Res. Life, of by the College/School/Department that holds the year lease.
It is assumed that most applications will be 'routine', and fit the criteria for 'visiting scholar' and length of stay. Thus, the Provost's Office staff will be able to act independently to allocate units.
"A visiting scholar is an expert in an academic discipline or disciplines with a short-term residency at UConn for mutual intellectual enrichment and collaboration. Normally these individuals are scholars or artists on leave from other institutions. However, 'Visiting Scholars' also may be unaffiliated and distinguished in their fields, or they may be representatives of governments or higher education institutions on official business. In the context of this housing, undergraduate and graduate students are not defined as visiting scholars."
The Process
- The Provost's office receives the applications, and prioritizes based on principles listed below.
- Residential Life actually manages the keys, occupancy, etc. HOWEVER, it is entirely up to the Host to manage the visit of the guest(s); this is NOT the responsibility of Residential Life or the Provost's Office.
How is Priority Determined?
- Application date - is the first priority
- Length of stay: Priority will be determined as follows:
- less than 2 weeks (Nathan Hale Hotel)
- 2-14 weeks
- 14-36 weeks
- 36+ weeks
Requests for housing that exceed 36 weeks will receive lower priority.
(The underlying logic here is two fold; first we want the Visiting Scholar housing to be as fully occupied as possible. However, if there is competition for housing, those requesting a year or close to it, may be able to find housing at nearby off campus sites. It is the shorter visits for which it is hard to find housing.)
For those staying a year or a bit more, one possible way to work with the system is to reserve 'Visiting Scholar' housing for 36 weeks, and then, in the summer (15 May to 15 Aug) move to Mansfield Apts. The latter are fully booked by undergraduates during the academic year, and are unavailable. However, in the summer, many of the Mansfield Apartment units are available for rent.
- Appeals. The Committee will be called upon to adjudicate special situations or appeals. ADDITIONAL AID WITH HOUSING, PARTICULARLY LONG-TERM HOUSING - Residential Life now maintains a web site for:
- those wishing to find OFF-CAMPUS housing, and
- those wishing to list their homes as available.
The web site is: http://offcampushousing.reslife.uconn.edu.

Housing Options
There are a limited number of completely furnished apartments located on or near campus which are available to incoming visiting scholars who are here for an extended period of time. These apartments range in size from one to two bedroom units.
If your visit to The University of Connecticut will be less than a week or two, you may find it most fitting to stay in one of the local hotels. Located conveniently on campus is the Nathan Hale Inn.
Additional hotels can be found at the Lodewick Visitors Center website. This website is also helpful with area restaurants and campus tours.
If visiting scholar housing is not an option or is unavailable to you, you may look on the website below to seek off campus housing accommodations. http://offcampushousing.reslife.uconn.edu.
